Getting There
Nov. 26th, 2017 07:45 amI had intended to be finished with this thing by today. That's not going to happen. I do have a pretty respectable word count, now, and even with massive cuts would still be above the 1,000 word minimum. So, hurray for our side, as my grandmother would say.
I really don't have that much more to do. I need to finish the section I'm working on, then I have one more to go. Maybe two, if I decide to do some sort of epilogue. It's not story so much as a series of conversations among the various characters, but I'm hoping it more or less fulfills the request. Hopefully more, rather than less....

Not Going Well
Nov. 11th, 2017 07:02 amMy Yuletide piece is Not Going Well. I have an idea, but I can't find my way into it. (Well, I have two ideas, but I can't find my way into the other one, either, not with the characters/pairings that were requested.) I've tried to start it and failed a few times. The other day, I decided to NaNo it -- just sit down and type. I ended up with about 500 words of utter garbage, but it's a start, and maybe it'll get better.
Maybe I chose the wrong viewpoint character. Maybe it's the tense; I'm writing in present tense, which always seems gloom-and-doomy to me -- at least when I write it -- but normal past tense wasn't working, either.
Anyway. It's a three-day weekend. I spent yesterday basically goofing off, so today and tomorrow, I need to bash my head against this thing until I either knock myself out or get a story out of it.

This Is Not So Easy
Oct. 17th, 2017 08:07 amThis is ending up being harder than I thought. I would absolutely love to do the time travel/au that is one of the prompts from my recipient, but I can't quite figure out logistics. It has to make sense to me first.... But I could use it to save some of the characters who were killed off in the sequel movie.
I also considered a Five Christmases spanning the twenty years between movies, but then I remembered that one main character is Jewish. Five Thanksgivings, instead, maybe? In a post-apocalyptic, re-building world, people would be more likely to come together for Thanksgivings, anyway, right?
There's a canon novel that bridges the span between movies, but I'm not certain I want to read it. Well, I do want to read it, but I'm not certain I have time. I got a used copy, though, just in case....
I need to sit down with a piece of paper and see if I can map out a time travel plot....

Inigo Montoya Time
Oct. 12th, 2017 06:26 amSo...I have a bit of time this morning, and I am reading a fandom wiki related to my assignment. There is a whole lot of "I don't think it means what you think it means going on," such as "unambiguous" for "unambitious," or "uninspiring" for "uninspired." (And I'm pretty sure they want "unambitious" for that latter, too.) People are also trying to sound smart by using "whom," but they're using it incorrectly....
That Was Quick
Oct. 11th, 2017 06:49 amI absolutely did not expect to receive my Yuletide match for another week. The last couple of exchanges I've participated in took a week (or more) to make matches after sign-ups closed (though I think that one of them was small enough that the mod(s) may have made the matches personally.
Also, I did not expect to match on what I was matched on, so that's interesting. I've already got a few things swirling, but I'll need to rewatch the movies -- at least it's only a couple of movies and not an entire television series! There are a couple of books I could read that are also canon, but as the recipient has not read them either, I guess there's no reason to, unless I do the time travel AU that they asked for...which...maybe.
I've seen the recipient's name before, so either I've read their fics or they've read and commented on mine. Or perhaps both. Hard to tell.
Anyway. I should go look at the rules again. I don't even know when this is due....

Dear Author, Yuletide 2017
Oct. 8th, 2017 08:17 amDear Yuletide Author,
Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. You are a treasure. A Yuletide treasure. (See what I did there?) =)
I'm sure you want to know a couple of things, so let's get started. I am reasonably open to just about anything you want to write. I'm good with any rating.
I like: fluff, happy endings, plot, missing scenes, What Happens Next, What Came Before, hurt/comfort, magic, well-done cross-overs, AUs, and I don't mind angst -- if there's a happy ending.
I don't like: incest (or relationships that could be interpreted as incest, like Buffy/Giles), mpreg, A/B/O, grimdark, gore, violence for the sake of violence.
Basically, I like happy, shiny fic, even if there's a bit of tarnish. I like side explorations, what ifs, and poking into corners of canon.
My Requests: I am open to pretty much anything you want to write, but I know how hard it can be to just Write Something without a jumping-off point, so I have a few suggestions....
Dark is Rising Sequence:
The Dark Is Rising is my favorite book. I was about the same age as Will Stanton when I first read it. I love everything about it -- except the way the series ended, with everyone except Will losing their memories. I would love to see magic coming back into their lives. It seems to me that the Dark is once more rising....
The Lady is a Very Mysterious Character, and I wouldn't mind seeing exploration of Who She Is and What Is Her Purpose. I would love to see the Lady coming back into Jane's life.
Ysabel:
Whenever anyone asks me who my favorite author is, my prompt reply is Guy Gavriel Kay (which, given that he didn't write my favorite book, is a bit odd if you think about it). I really love Kim Ford in this book, and while I seem to recall that Ysabel worked out the relationship between her and Kim and Ned, I'm don't recall that Kim did. I wouldn't mind seeing that, perhaps with Melanie's help?
Alternatively, since it's Yuletide, what's Christmas like for Ned and Kim now? How does Kim celebrate, knowing what she does about other worlds and other deities?
Practical Magic
This is one of my favorite movies -- just watched it a couple of nights ago, in fact. I would be happy with anything at all in this universe, but here are a few suggestions: We see that Sally's powers manifest early, but Gilly's don't until later. How and when?
The Owens ladies jump off the roof at Halloween and fly (more or less). How do they celebrate Yule? Or other holidays?
Why do the Aunts wear Edwardian clothing?
How do the Owens ladies get along on their island now? Are they more accepted now that the curse is broken, or do things just go along as they have for the last 200 years?
The Tomorrow People (1973):
The Tomorrow People was my first fandom. It was carried by Nickelodeon back when Nickelodeon and A&E were new networks sharing broadcast space. (Yes. I am old.) It aired at both 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and I watched both airings of it. I loved this show, and I still do, even with the cheesy SFX. (So. Much. Cheese.) I would be happy for anything set in this universe, on Earth, on other planets, at the Trig.
Since it's Yuletide, how do the Tomorrow People celebrate Christmas?
How does Elizabeth cope with being a surrogate mother to younger TP?
How much trouble do Stephen and Mike and Andrew get into?
How do they handle the decreasing levels of privacy in the world?
I wouldn't mind seeing a family reunion or sorts, showing them all getting back together after some time being apart, off doing their various things.
The Tomorrow People (1992):
I was so excited for this remake of The Tomorrow People, and I was glued to the TV for each installment. (And I still have my tapes.) It was different, but I loved it.
Families play a much bigger role in this iteration of the TP than the original. How do the TP celebrate holidays? Do they stay with their families? Do they drag their families to the Ship?
Speaking of families, do Megabyte's mother and sister know he's a Tomorrow Person?
The TP know that there are extraterrestrials. Do they get into space themselves? Do they, for example, unravel the mysteries of the Ship? (I can just see Megabyte clowning around on the moon, for instance.)
Robin of Sherwood:
I requested only Robert and Marion, but am open to any other characters. I loved this show, and would absolutely love to see a Sherwood Yule celebration.
I would love to see Robert and Marion trying to get along as Robert deals with taking on the mantle of the Hooded Man.
As an AU, what if Marion was the Hooded One? What if Herne took on a daughter instead of a son? Or what if some other forest spirit chose her for much the same tasks as the Hooded Man?
Whatever you choose to write, Author, I am certain it will be fabulous! Happy Yuletide to you, and thank you again!
